Ancient Greek and Roman Theater is a project designed by Philomobile where the genesis of theater is studied through exploring the ancient cultures of Greece and Rome. In visiting the actual historical sites where theater was born, Philomobile fuses archaeological investigations with lectures and performances, creating a more experiential event for its participants. This trip is open too all and sundry, but may have particular interest to anyone involved in theater, or with a desire to have a deeper understanding of ancient culture and the birth of drama and its origins in the cult of Dionysus.

Ancient Greek and Roman Theater
This course will explore the birth of theater in ancient Greece through its transformation in the Roman Empire. While studying the history and architecture of the theater, we will look into its philosophical, mythic, and literary origins. Classical plays will be read and performed in ancient theaters led by a team of specialists in acting, theater, and philosophy. Lectures on various aspects of theater and antiquity will be held followed by discussions. Trips are organized as per country (Greece, Italy, or Turkey) with the duration of 1 week, 2 weeks, or 3 weeks. Trips will include visits to such places as Aspendos in southern Turkey, and Epidaurus in Greece.
Philomobile is an organization designed for those who would like to explore and study philosophy in situ, that is, in the places where philosophers once lived. We set two goals for such a philosophical education: to recreate the conditions of the past on site within the context of our own times, and to explore the other aspects of the epoch, the spirit of the times in which the philosophers existed. Some of these aspects are art, literature, architecture, theater, science and religion. In addition to classes on ancient philosophy, Philomobile offers classes on other aspects of ancient civilizations. Prices vary from course to course and depend primarily on course duration, places visited, and the number of participants.
